WHAT ARE SENSORY ISSUES?

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience sensory difficulties. These occur when the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information from the senses.

Sensory issues can affect one or more of the following:

Hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness): Averse to bright lights, loud noises, or certain textures.

Hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness): Unresponsive to pain, unaware of personal space, or constantly seeking sensory input.

HOW SENSORY ISSUES IMPACT CHILDREN WITH ASD

Sensory issues can put children with ASD at a disadvantage in many situations. They may:

Have difficulty with daily tasks such as getting dressed or brushing teeth

Feel overwhelmed in crowded or noisy environments

Struggle to engage in social interactions or participate in activities

WHY EARLY IDENTIFICATION MATTERS

Early identification and intervention can help children with ASD manage sensory issues and improve their quality of life.

Strategies may include:

Sensory integration therapy

Creating sensory-friendly environments at home or school

Structured routines and occupational therapy support

Note:

If you notice several red flags, please consult an occupational therapist or developmental specialist.
